Mambusao town police head Inspector Samuel Vipinosa said Vice Mayor Abel Martinez, 79, was outside his residence along Rizal Street in the town proper when he was attacked by the lone gunman around 6 a.m.

“He was out on the street when the suspect approached and shot him about six times,” Vipinosa said.
Martinez was rushed to a district hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Vipinosa said the area was populated but no one was able to identify the gunman.
“We believe he is a member of a gun-for-hire,” he said.
He said there was no death threat against Martinez prior to the incident, though they are not discounting the possibility that the killing could be work-related.
Martinez, who was on his last term, was reportedly planning to run for mayor in next year’s elections.
